WHY WE’RE SLEEPING LESS
By Madison Park
(CNN) – Yes, Americans are stressed over the economy.

A new poll finds that Americans are sleeping less because of economic stress and demands of modern life.

Our day seems shorter, schedules are crammed and precious sleep hours are sacrificed — tossing, turning or working.

Adding onto that is Daylight Saving Time, which begins Sunday at 2 a.m. when Americans will have to set their clocks ahead by an hour.

Released this week, the National Sleep Foundation’s annual poll estimated that Americans get an average of about 6.7 hours of sleep during a weekday.

Get ready to rumble on your Wii

Admit it- you hate coming to the gym. Maybe you would rather be home in front of you new plasma, firing up your favorite Wii game, and eating some sort of artificially flavored, over-the-top powdered chip. Well, today is your lucky day.

Gold’s Gym has partnered with Ubisoft, the third largest video game maker in the world, to become the title sponsor of an exciting new cardio workout game for Nintendo Wii called “The Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout.” Compatible with the Wii Balance Board™, the game provides players with a total personal training experience. Players can perform a variety of exercises including cardio boxing, running, sit ups, and other activities while also tracking burned calories and body weight evolution. The game offers multiple training modes and fitness levels, and the difficulty of the gameplay evolves as the player’s fitness level increases. The game will be sold in major retail outlets like Best Buy, Target, Game Stop and WalMart and every game will come with a 7 day pass to Gold’s Gym!

Check out the previews below….and don’t even think this will take the place of your gym workout.

Papa John is telling us to limit our pizza intake? Reverse psychology? I just polished off my fourth slice before typing this.

Papa John’s founder warns against eating too much pizza

LONDON, England (CNN) – The founder of one of America’s largest pizza chains has offered unexpected advice to his customers to limit themselves to only one or two slices.

Pizza is not normally known for its health benefits; thick, cheesy toppings push up the calorie count.

Biking outside- a novel concept, eh?

Is that who I think it is? Yes, that is our front desk staffer Jessica.

Is that who I think it is? Yes, that is our front desk staffer Jessica.

So it turns out that this wasn’t just an ordinary Monday morning at the gym. President-Elect Barack Obama strolled into the our Downtown gym along with 8 of his favorite secret service agents. He took pictures, he gladhanded, and got a pre-election workout in at the most logical choice for a Presidential hopeful. He was there for about an hour before he headed off to a rally up the street.

If our club is good for him, it must be good for you and the rest of the country, right?

GOT A BRAND NEW BAG? FILL IT WITH THESE ITEMS

26 08 2008

Don’t get caught in the locker room with an over-sized duffel filled with excess workout gear. Stock your tote with these smart essentials to maximize your time at the gym.

What: WEIGHT-LIFTING GLOVES
Why: You’d rather obsess about your weight lifting form — not your blisters and calluses. Look for machine-washable gloves that are made of soft, durable leather.
Try: The Classic Series Leather Gloves ($12.95; select Gold’s Gym Pro Shops or goldsgear.com)

What: 2-IN-1 SHAMPOO AND BODY WASH
Why: Let’s be honest: Whereas the average male is okay with just any old gym shampoo and soap, the average female tends to require at least shampoo, body wash and so on after their workout. This multitasking product, with a scent perfect for men and women, saves you from packing two separate bottles in your gym bag.
Try: Philosophy the Fragrance, Perfumed Shampoo and Shower Gel ($24 for 16 ounces; philosophy.com)

What: CHAMOIS TOWEL
Why: Used by swimmers and divers for more than 20 years, a chamois towel is made of a highly absorbent high-tech PVA material designed to dry your body more quickly than traditional, bulky towels do.
Try: The Sammy Towel ($13;lane4swim.com)

What: WATER BOTTLE
Why: Using a high-quality, reusable bottle makes sense both financially (no more $2 bottles of water) and environmentally (no plastic waste).
Try: SWIGZ Dual Chamber Water Bottle ($14.95; goldsgear.com)

What: RECOVERY DRINK
Why: Repair your muscles with loads of protein and anti-inflammatory nutrients within 30 minutes of exercising.
Try: Vanilla Créme Muscle Milk (select Gold’s Gym Pro Shops)

What: RUBBER FLIP-FLOPS
Why: When you hop into the shower, you’ll want to protect your feet. Plus, it’s nice to have something clean and dry to slip into after a hard workout.
Try: Havaianas flip-flops ($16;havaianasus.com)

What: BATTERY-POWERED IPOD CHARGER
Why: There’s almost nothing worse than climbing onto the elliptical only to realize that your iPod is kaput. By tossing a portable charger into your bag, you’ll always have extra juice available for your cardio workout.
Try: iTurbo iPod Charger ($25; travelsmith.com)

What: RE-SEALABLE PLASTIC BAG
Why: If you’re a gym-goer who regularly squeezes in a morning workout before heading to the office, you don’t want your dirty, sweaty gym clothes stinking up your tote — and all the other gym accessories in it. Keep odors at bay by placing the gym clothes and socks you’ve worn in plastic resealable bags.
Try: Ziploc Storage Bags, Jumbo 2 Gallon Size ($4.69 for 12 bags)

What: WORKOUT JOURNAL
Why: You know it’s important to keep track of your fitness goals — and, better yet, your progress. With a journal devoted to both exercise and general diet information, you’ll be able to record the decisions you make.
Try: Gold’s Gym Workout Journal ($16.95; goldsgear.com)

What: CLEAN T-SHIRT
Why: There’s nothing better than a clean, dry T-shirt waiting for you after a tough workout. Besides, do you really want to throw your work clothes back on?
Try: A classic tee from Gold’s Gym. See our proshops for great deals on the most comfy shirts ever.

FAY AFTERMATH

23 08 2008

She is not totally out of our hair, but it seems most of the serious stuff has left. Currently, Gold’s Gym St. John’s is still closed. Once we were able to get to the gym, about 3 inches of water had entered the gym, covering the workout floor. We are diligenlty getting the water out and are tenatively planning to reopen Monday at 5 a.m. Please call the gym at 338.0644 to make sure we are opening or check out the website for more details.

Gold’s Gym Downtown and Baymeadows are back open and running regular hours. There was very little damage at those locations.

Thanks to all staff and family who helped during the storm. We hope everyone made it through with very little damage.
